Event Information: Title of Presentation: Lech Walesa speaks at Seton Hall University as part of the World Leaders Forum Keynote Speaker: Lech Walesa, Former President of Poland and Nobel Laureate Webcast will begin at: Thursday, December 1 at 4 pm About the Keynote Speaker:
Walesa's appearance marks the 25th anniversary of the historic strike in 1980 by Solidarity, then an underground labor movement (which he helped create), at the Lenin shipyard in Gdansk, Poland. Workers, incensed by an increase in prices set by the communist government, demanded the right to organize free and independent trade unions. Walesa's leadership of the movement and subsequent presidency made Poland a pioneer of economic and political reform in Eastern Europe. Today, he heads the Lech Walesa Institute, which strives to advance the ideals of democracy and free market reform throughout the world.
